One Place and Every Place

One Place and Every Place was a joint exhibition with Paula Marten and Sarah Ruttle in Cnoc Bui in Union Hall.
June 20th to July 8th 2024
Paula and Sarah have many connecting threads, both trained as Textile Designers , have a love of drawing, cutting out paper and creating intricate patterns and textures . The work connects to a search for peace in nature , how it effects our human spirt , providing us with a place outside and inside of ourselves.
Paula’s work has been nurtured by a special place, a place where she has been privileged to spend time alone, submerged, walking, sitting, closely observing and recording. Paula took time to investigate nature, to watch the changes through the seasons, photographing, drawing and painting throughout the year.
She slowly developed her own language of mark making, colours and textures. Paula found old sketch books from her textile degree, drawings and ink washes from her first time in West Cork. She began redrawing on these, reflecting on her first experience of this landscape and the impact and connection it has had on her life and work.
Drawing the reflections that mirror the ever-changing light, patterns from branches and leaves. Paula’s focus became the water bouncing the reflection back through an undercurrent of layered pond life, absorbing the intricate detail and depth and the transition of the seasons. Sketch Books have ink drawings layered on top of the blurry, inky marks and washes from the past.
Through the work Paula became more aware of the same patterns in nature reflecting back at her in every aspect of her daily life. Her observation of nature, it's beauty, peace, and the need for change. The investigation and development of the work of this place , has become a relief from this challenging world.
