Tjaldur

Tjaldur is a wooden sailing boat currently under reconstruction in Hegarty's Boat Yard. David Kelly sailed on her as a teenager and when the boat came up for sale he bought her, knowing that Liam and John Hegarty and their crew of talented boat builders would have the necessary skills to rebuild her.

She was designed by Peter Brett  and built in Tyrell's of Arklow in 1963. I first met David and his wife Emer at my exhibition opening of "Saoirse". They asked would I be interested in following and painting the boats progress. I can only say the first day I saw her, I had goose bumps all over , I gasped with joy when I climbed up the lapper to peer into her and see the ribs exposed in an amazing explosion of colours with all the layers of paint. She reminded me of a butterfly , she is cocooned in a small stone shed waiting to be transformed to her former glory.
