June 10th walk from Portmarnock to Malahide.
On a dreary October morning I booked tickets to see The Cure @ Malahide Castle.
My husband Richard booked at last minute (not liking my choice of accommodation) the beautiful Portmanock Hotel & Golf Links just down the coast from Malahide in North Dublin. After the long drive up from West Cork, I needed to stretch my legs, we walked from the hotel, along the coast to Malahide as The Cure were playing at the Castle.
The walk was incredible and every step of the way I could see swimmers everywhere enjoying the water.
There were steps off rocks and lots of purpose built dressing areas.
It merged from rocks to sand, and mixtures of both.
This is just coming into Malahide, I so wanted to jump in too.
The Cure were amazing and played for two and a half hours, a Cure fan’s dream gig. I was transported back to my teenage years and college days.
After being in a sea of people, I persuaded Richard to walk the same way back to the Hotel really so I could see and be near the water again.
We had a much deserved drink in the bar with an eccentric mix of golfers and Cure Heads. I was hoping Robert Smith would join us.
Turning the Plastic Tide
I love going to gigs but hate the waste and heavy use of single use plastic. I can’t drink beer and had to buy a plastic bottle of coke and what can only be done is bring your own empty cup or bottle and re-fill.
June 10th Portmanock dip @ 10.30
High Tide 04.41 (3.91m)
Low Tide 10.47 (0.74m)
High Tide 17.26 (3.67m)
Low Tide 23.01 (1.18m)
First Quarter Moon
In the morning I was desperate to go for a dip, however it was a very different scenario from yesterday as the tide was way, way out. I could see no-one else swimming unlike yesterday. As we walked onto the beach there were a few Guards standing talking and I asked them if it was safe to swim with the tide so low. To which one of them replied ” Well it will be the level of bath water for miles out, so knock yourself out”.
We walked out to the water and I spotted a few swimmers further over, so we walked up there as best to stick with other swimmers. I waded out a good bit till waist level and had a lovely swim up and down. Unfortunately I did not have my underwater camera so photos taken by Richard who kindly guarded my clothes.
What a beautiful spot and I will definitely return for more gigs and swimming what a great combination.
