Waning Full Moon
A bunch of wild, wonderful and inspirational women who live in West Cork, braved the Wild Atlantic elements very early on Saturday morning. To lots of us this is a normal every day activity, that is part of the fabric of our life.
The connection we have together, through getting into the water is so strong, my words cannot describe it. I just hope the pictures capture the joy the water brings us all, the special bond of friendship and support that keeps on growing.
Two very special ladies Lough Hyne Lapper’s Niamh O’Donovan and Anne-Marie Greene, organised this pre Christmas ” Dip in the Nip” now in its third year. This event has raised lots of money for West Cork Branch of Cancer Connect , which provide invaluable, lifesaving transport for patients to receive treatment in Cork City Hospitals.
The event has grown in numbers each year, so for safety there was a cap of fifty dippers. A Whats app group was formed and thanks to Niamh and Anne-Marie for all the endless messages and information.Of course as it is not wise to go into the water if you are sick, so there were many last minute cancelations so the girls did mighty work arranging for others to step in who were on the waiting list. And for pre ordering the wonderful breakfasts for afterwards.
At 8.15 am at a secret West Cork location we all huddle together for warmth. Not many of us slept as the winds were howling outside our bedroom windows all night. The atmosphere was electric we are buzzing with excitement, nerves and adrenaline.
Many thanks to our Lough Hyne Lapper Bouncers Noel, Declan on the left photo and missing from photos Donagh and Garry.
I won’t mention every one , but here is Niamh O’Donovan and her fabulous Mum Denise who inspire me all year round.
Above four photos are Tracey WoodWolfe our official on land photographer.
The highly motivating Anne-Marie Greene gives us the all important safety talk, telling us to keep to the middle of the beach and buddy up with other dippers.
We all de robe and bravely wade nervously into the cold water. There is laughter, screams and shouts and lots of chatter as we start to swim.
This amazing photograph is by Tracey Wood Wolfe.

What an experience the buzz we all got stayed with us for days afterwards. It was just fan flipping tastic.
Lots of layers and hot drinks afterwards and it was onto The Church in Skibbereen for a much deserved breakfast.

Thank you to all the wonderful people who made this experience one I will never forget.
€4890 was collected on the day and as last year more money will follow.€7550 was raised last year so fingers crossed we beat that.
Turning the Plastic Tide Tips
West Cork people are starting to make changes to reduce their plastic. As swimmers and lovers of our beautiful environment we have to. I hope my daughters and their children can have the same wonderful experiences I am privileged to enjoy.
I started to try and reduce my plastic consumption in 2018, I recieve lots of tips and ideas from lots of people. So each blog has a tip at the end. I have also gone into Fields SuperValue sharing and receiving more tips. Many thanks to Ruth Field (she also did the dip) for supporting me and allowing me into the supermarket and for making changes in the store.
Shopping local is just the way to go, supporting their business and there are great plastic reducing services and products.
Above Yvonne and Sharon from Essential Beauty in Skibbereen have this amazing make up brand Couleur Caramel. The packaging for most products is card board and palettes are re-usable . The ingredients are natural and organic and they have reusable cotton face wipes, I highly recommend these products, would make a fantastic Christmas presents.
The farmers Market in Skibbereen is where you will find Maggies Refill Station. She has washing up liquids, floor cleaner, clothes washing liquids and a range of other great products . I bring her my empty bottles to refill and she is cheaper than buying a new plastic product.
